Understanding the Cost of Family Photography: What You Need to Know

Are you interested in family, maternity or newborn photography, but you’re worried about the cost?

I get it; photography can be expensive, and it’s important to understand why.

Let’s talk about it!

I have been a photographer now for 14 years and I paid for photography before and I still pay for it to this day. There are many factors that go into what a photographer charges and we are going to go over some of those here:

Photography requires a specialized skill set and experience.

As a family photographer, I’m not just a skilled photographer, but I also have a deep understanding of the family unit and what it is like to have and work with children of all ages. I know how to work with all lighting situations, I respect your privacy and intimacy, and most importantly, I know how to capture the moments that matter most. This came from many years behind the camera perfecting my skill. I currently have been in the family photography industry for 14 years so I not only charge to run my business but I charge for the years of experience I have with working with families of all sizes and dynamics.

Photography takes time and patience.

Family, maternity and especially newborn photos can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours (or more) Most times children don’t begin to truly warm up until the last 20 minutes of a full session and that is truly where most of that magic happens. Every single time – the kids don’t even want to go home! It’s just that fun- at least that is how it is when families choose to work with me. I have never had a child leave sad, crying or unhappy. The way your children feel at sessions is truly my top priority. They will be the stars of the show every single time.

The cost of photography includes more than just the time spent at the the session and editing the photos.

It also covers the cost of professional-grade camera equipment, including cameras, lenses, computers, editing software, monthly subscriptions to keep the business a float as well as documentation to have a legal tax paying business and CPR certifications. Photo sessions can take anywhere from 8-12 hours collectively to edit to completion. Additionally, as a family photographer, I invest in ongoing training and education to improve my skills and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and trends. Photography education is vital in the growth of your photographer and it too comes with a price. You are not just paying someone for the hour you are paying them for the countless years of experience.

How much is photography in Marietta, GA?

The cost of a photographer can vary depending on experience and the services and products offered. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $1500 for a photography package that includes digital files with a print release (which means the ability to print an unlimited number of images at the lab of your choice).  If you are looking for a photographer who offers physical prints and products you are looking at an upwards of $3000-$5000 per session.

A legal business pays taxes + has expenses to stay open:

Photographer do not pocket every dollar that you pay for photos. We have to pay legal fees, taxes quarterly as well as monthly expenses to be able to run our businesses. The thing is photographers who are not registered with the state or paying taxes most likely are not running a legal business so logically they can charge less. This is something you should be making sure of when hiring a photographer. Are you paying taxes to your employer? Well, your photographer should also be paying to run their business.

Family photography is an experience that you’ll never forget, and having professional photos to look back on can help you remember all the emotions, details, and love that surrounded you during these milestones in your life as your children are growing up.

These photos are not just for you; they’re a gift to your child. They’ll show them how loved they were from the very beginning, and these images will be cherished by you, your child, and your family for generations to come.I want to make sure that everyone who wants to capture their family story through photography has the opportunity to do so. That’s why I offer payment plans of all types to make the investment more manageable.

Photography may seem expensive, but it’s an investment in preserving memories, celebrating life, and honoring the birthing process.

So, if you’re considering family, maternity or in-home newborn photography, know that it’s worth every penny and more!

Don’t just take my word for it 😉 Here is what some of my clients had to say about their investment:
